What caused it to sink
There are many different factors of why the Edmund Fitzgerald sank, and it is still discussed today. One major factor was the storm, that took out the power at Whitefish Bay and took out the ship. The storm was the worst and biggest Captain McSorely had ever witnessed. Another reason was that it the ship was holding too much cargo, thus easily flooded and taken down by the storm. Both of the water pumps on the ship were damaged, making it more susceptible to sinking. Most say that the Edmund Fitzgerald sank because a couple hatch covers were left loose. They blew open during the storm, and kept filling with water. These hatch covers were quite big, as they covered the compartments where the iron ore was kept in the middle of the ship. Most all ships like this break in half as they start to tip one end down, while the other end floats, somewhat like the Titanic.
